Being an Australian comes hand in hand with the international reputation of being an active, healthy beach goer who constantly sports salty locks and a bronzed bod. But, unfortunately now thanks to a new study we can add a wrinkled complexion to our list of l traits we’re renown for.

The study, which was undertaken by dermatologists at Monash University, has found that Australian women are ageing as much as two decades faster than European and American women. And it all comes down to the sun drenched climate - often year round - in our great outdoors and our proximity to the equator, according to the study’s lead author Associate Professor Greg Goodman.

"These high UV levels put Australians at particular risk of photoageing, especially when combined with Australians' traditionally outdoor, sun-seeking lifestyle and a predominantly fair-skinned population" Goodman told SMH.

The study was conducted by comparing 1472 caucasian and asian women’s faces (who have had no cosmetic surgery) aged between 18 and 75 from Australia, Canada, UK and US. The depressing results concluded that Australian women reported "significantly more severe signs of ageing at younger ages and a greater degree of change with age for most features than women from the other countries.”

And the bad news isn’t over yet. Goodman attributes some of the problem to sunscreen, he says while SPF protects us from getting burnt it doesn’t protect us from the UV causing the skin-ageing issue. When skin is exposed to external stress such as UV the body produces a stress hormone called cortisol. High levels of cortisol in the body can have a number of known negative effects on our health, but this imbalance is having additional impacts on our skin contributing to premature ageing by depleting the natural production of collagen.

Thankfully - before you go locking yourself indoors for the next decade - you can find solace in the news that there are products to help combat the savage ageing effects the Australian sun has on our skin.

The star ingredient in the OXYGEN-C Anti-Ageing, Anti-Stress Range, 'Neurophroline™', a unique extract from Wild Indigo (Himalayas), won the coveted Gold for Best Ingredient in the 2016 In-Cosmetics Global Innovation Zone Awards for its unique ability to quickly reduce the visible signs of skin stress caused by cortisol.

This breakthrough ingredient has been clinically proven to reduce the production of cortisol in skin cells by up to 70% in just two hours, significantly improving & protecting the skin from cortisol-related ageing.

So, while using an SPF daily is a vital step for skin health, if you want to keep wrinkles at bay make sure you slip, slop, slap and… lather your skin in a product loaded with powerful actives like Neurophroline™ which are specifically designed to protect the integrity of your dermal layers.
