How To Correctly Store Your Beauty Products
If you thought storing your beauty products was as simple as throwing them in a pile somewhere in your bathroom, think again! It’s extremely important to consider where each of your makeup and skincare items are stored to ensure they stay effective and safe to use on the skin. Read on for some useful tips on how to keep your products hygienic and organised!
KEEP IT FRESH
There are 3 general rules when it comes to storing your beauty products:
- Keep it cool
- Keep it covered
- Keep it dry
The reason you should keep your makeup away from hot, humid and damp environments is because these types of places can quickly become breeding grounds for all sorts of bacteria that can cause your products to break down, produce mould and become ineffective faster. Keep your products away from window sills exposed to the sun, heated rooms and stuffy drawers. If you want to keep them in the bathroom for convenience, ensure you regularly wipe down wet surfaces and seal your products tightly after use.
BEAUTY TIP: Try storing your beauty products in the fridge!
As strange as this may sound, the cool temperature of the fridge will help maintain the positive properties in your products. It will also be incredibly satisfying smothering a dollop of your fresh-out-the-fridge face cream onto your face on a hot Summer’s day.
THROW AWAY EXPIRED GOODS
Just like the things we consume, we should really keep an eye out for expired makeup and skincare products. It may hurt to let them go, but products that have gone bad are only going to wreak havoc on your skin.
Every product should come with an expiry date (usually from the date of opening). The symbol often looks like this:
Keep note of the month that you open the product and bin the products that have passed their expiry date. The best way we’ve found is to write notes on your phone, or in an excel spreadsheet. Sounds like work, we know! But trust us, this important beauty tip could save your skin!
KEEP IT NEAT AND TIDY
This isn’t a necessity but storing your products in organised shelves and compartments will help save you time in the morning and at night – you’ll no longer waste time shuffling through your entire makeup collection looking for that one shade of lipstick, or through your skincare products trying to find that one eye cream.

If you want to get creative and save on cash, repurpose candle holders, coffee bean jars, mugs, or anything else you can find around the house that will neatly hold and store your products.
