Why a Vitamin C Oil Works Differently to a Serum

Most Vitamin C products are water-based serums. They work well. But they are not the only way to deliver Vitamin C — and for some skin types, they are not the best way.

Here is the difference. Water-based serums carry Vitamin C in an aqueous (water) base. Oil-based formulas carry Vitamin C in a lipid (fat) base. The form of Vitamin C matters too: this formula uses Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, an oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative that is stable, well-tolerated, and skin-compatible.

From your mid-30s onward, the skin's natural oil production slows. The result: skin that feels drier, holds onto moisture less effectively, and shows the visible effects of daily environmental exposure more quickly. A water-based serum delivers actives but does not replenish the skin's lipid layer. A lightweight oil-based formula does both. It delivers the Vitamin C while simultaneously supporting the look and feel of nourished, comfortable skin.

This is why the "oil format is greasy" concern applies to heavy oils, not lightweight ones. The Cacay, Pracaxi, and Jojoba oils in this formula absorb quickly and leave no residue. They are chosen specifically for their skin-compatibility and fast absorption.

This product is best suited to skin that is:

  • Dry, tight, or dehydrated
  • Low in natural oil production (common after 40)
  • Reactive, sensitive, or showing the effects of alcohol-based serums
  • Looking for radiance with nourishment, not just brightening alone

If your skin feels greasy after applying a facial oil, the issue is usually application volume (2–3 drops is sufficient) or application timing (apply to slightly damp skin after cleansing, before moisturiser).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a facial oil if I have mature skin?

Yes — and it may actually suit you better than a serum. As skin matures, natural oil production decreases. A lightweight facial oil replenishes what the skin is producing less of. It nourishes drier skin, supports the look and feel of more comfortable skin, and helps active ingredients like Vitamin C absorb effectively. Use 2–3 drops after cleansing.

What is the difference between a Vitamin C serum and a Vitamin C oil?

A Vitamin C serum uses a water-based carrier. A Vitamin C oil uses a lipid-based carrier and an oil-soluble form of the active. The key difference is what happens alongside the Vitamin C delivery. An oil-based formula also nourishes and supports the skin. For skin that is dry or reactive, this dual action of actives plus skin comfort in a single step is a meaningful advantage.

Will a facial oil make my skin look greasy?

Not this one. The formula uses lightweight, fast-absorbing plant oils — Cacay, Pracaxi, and Jojoba — chosen specifically because they sink into skin without leaving a residue. Greasiness is usually caused by heavy, occlusive oils or by using too much product. Two to three drops is the correct amount. Apply to clean, slightly damp skin and press in gently rather than rubbing.

How do I use a Vitamin C facial oil in my routine?

Apply 2–3 drops to your face, neck, and décolletage after cleansing, before your moisturiser. Use in the morning for best results — Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection that works well alongside daytime exposure. Follow with SPF. You can also layer this after a water-based Vitamin C serum if you want to combine both formats.

What are the benefits of Vitamin C oil for the face?

Vitamin C oil delivers antioxidant support, supports an even skin tone, and visibly improves radiance over time. The oil carrier in this formula adds a second layer of benefit: it nourishes dry skin, supports the look and feel of comfortable, resilient skin, and helps skin look more hydrated. Key ingredients — Cacay Oil, Pracaxi Oil, and Jojoba Oil — each contribute to a smoother, more supple complexion alongside the Vitamin C active.

Is Vitamin C oil good for women over 40?

It is well-suited to this skin stage. After 40, skin typically produces less natural oil, which can lead to a drier, tighter feeling and skin that needs more support to feel comfortable. A lightweight Vitamin C oil addresses this directly — it delivers an active known to visibly improve radiance and skin tone, in a carrier that also helps skin feel nourished and comfortable. The result is brightness and nourishment in one step, without heaviness or residue.

Generic Skincare questions - FAQ

1. How should I layer my skincare?

The best approach is to layer from thinnest to heaviest products after cleansing. This typically starts with a toner (or essence) and serums, followed my moisturisers and oils. Always finish your morning routine with an SPF and be sure not to mix too many serums to avoid potential skin irritation due to the various pH levels (for example, Vitamin C is best used in the morning, and Retinol at night).

2. When will I start to see results?

This depends on the product, but just like a new fitness regime, consistency is always key. For hydration, you'll notice a difference in skin's moisture within minutes using Dragon's Blood. For brightening and discolouration, you'll find a visibly smoother and more luminous complexion from using after 2 weeks using Vitamin C products. For facial sculpting and tightening, you'll notice a change after 1-4 weeks using Advance Superlift. For strengthening and repairing serum treatments, which require skin renewal and turnover, these can take up to 4 weeks for visible results.

3. Do I need a morning and night routine?

Yes, we recommend a unique skincare routine for both morning and night. Just like your routine throughout the day, your skin has different needs too. In the morning you want to prep and protect. Think layering Vitamin-C for brightening and defence from free-radicals, finished with a light moisturiser and an SPF to protect from the harsh, Australian sun. At night, it's all about repair, renewal and preparing skin for the next day. This is when you swap the Vitamin-C for regenerating serums like AHAs and Retinols, which are sensitive to sunlight. Your night routine should also include a heavier moisturiser, like the Dragon's Blood Ultra Plumping Night Cream, to smoothe, repair and replenish waterloss while you sleep.

4. How many products do I need my routine?

This depends on what you're trying to achieve. A basic routine requires only a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF. However this only addresses the bare minimum of skincare. To address keyareas of concern such as crepey skin, fine lines and wrinkles, discolouration, dehydration, hyperpigmentation or redness, we recommend gradually introducing high performance BOOST products — targeted serums, eye treatments and masks — to achieve your desired result. You can view our range of high performance serums and treatments here.

5. Does my product contain naturally derived ingredients?

Yes, we combine science-backed formulas with naturally derived actives to create thoughtfully designed, clinically proven skincare for every stage of your skin's journey. We carefully choose what goes into our formulas, and just as importantly, what does not, to ensure you're getting the best formulas to achieve unmistakable results.

6. How do I know if Dragon's Blood or Advance Superlift is the right LIFT for me?

Both Dragon's Blood and Advance Superlift rebuild long term strength and structure in mature skin. We recommend Dragon's Blood for those looking to restore skin resilience and youthfulness for a plump and hydrated complexion. The Advance Superlift range is perfect for those wanting their skincare regime to go even further. It targets saggy and crepey skin to visibly lift and recontour, improving firmness and bounce.
